June 13-16 Mosel Blending Escape

  • Mosel Valley Germany (map)

Allow our charming and charismatic partner Erni Loosen to personally introduce you to Germany’s legendary Mosel region, with its breathtakingly steep Riesling vineyards rising up from the banks of the Mosel River and its surprisingly creative culinary experiences. Exploring like locals, we will also take in the ancient region’s fascinating culture and history, and make our own famously mineral-driven Riesling from the Loosen family’s very old vines.

Winemaking

Erni Loosen’s unwavering commitment to his philosophy — a focus on the family’s old ungrafted vines, a move toward organic farming and the use of only minimally interventionist cellar practices — allows this world-class Mosel terroir to truly shine through. His Rieslings majestically combine intensity and lightness, offering a unique expression of this regal grape. Members will use 3-4 different Riesling wines, from the family’s various steep blue slate vineyards and each made in a different winemaking style, to craft their perfectly balanced 2023 Riesling.

Accommodations

The Dr. Loosen Estate Guesthouse, adjacent to the estate house in Bernkastel, where you can end the day in peace in one of seven tastefully appointed rooms. The large terrace also invites you to linger and enjoy a glass or two of wine, while taking in the stunning view of the vineyards and the Mosel.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrivals. After a welcome drink with our jovial and passionate winemaking partner Erni Loosen, we will allow him to orient us and demystify the complex world of Mosel wine, as we taste through some of the greats. With our new knowledge in hand, we will move on to dinner (and more of those Mosel greats) at local favorite Weinromantik Hotel’s “Richtershof 1809”restaurant.

Day 2 | Enjoy a private blending session with Mosel master Erni and his team, with the objective of creating a final blend to perfectly match your taste and palate. A light lunch will be followed by a stroll through the vineyards with the highly knowledgeable Erni explaining what makes them so unique. We’ll continue the tour during a cruise on one of the world’s most famous rivers, enjoying a tasting of Loosen Grand Cru Rieslings as we pass each vineyard where they were grown. Dinner that night is an elegant 5-course dinner prepared for us at the estate, paired with some rare Loosen wines as well as gems from other parts of the world from Erni’s legendary personal cellar.

Day 3 | A tasting with Mosel legend Fritz Haag will be followed by a private guided tour of the St. Nikolaus-Hospital/Cusanusstifft library in Bernkastel and a typical Mosel lunch at a local favorite. After some rest and relaxation, we’ll enjoy an unforgettable farewell dinner (and one of the country’s best wine lists) at Puricelli’s.
